People & Lifestyle

Pacific Beach is home to people of all ages from many walks of life. While the neighborhood was previously populated by a myriad of college and university students and young professionals, the makeup of Pacific Beach is gradually growing towards a more mature and affluent crowd because of rising property and rental value and costs. The community is a warm and active one, where residents take advantage of the proximity to the Pacific—whether by surfing, swimming, skating, or strolling at sunset—and the numerous local shops, bars, and restaurants along the boardwalk.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Pacific Beach’s restaurant and nightlife culture continue to excite and expand with Garnet Avenue becoming a major hub of places to eat, drink, and shop. Located on Pacific Beach Pier, Kono’s Cafe has a local surf vibe and beach fare like no other. Visitors and locals alike line-up for this diner’s famous breakfasts and stay for the snug beach-themed interior and oceanfront views. Even outside of this strip, you’ll find hidden dining gems tucked away at every turn. At Oscars Mexican Seafood, you’ll find the well-known and popular hearty, mouthwatering tacos that have locals going wild. Nearby JRDN is a trendy destination for refined takes on surf 'n' turf with a stunning view. They have an outdoor patio and wonderfully-crafted cocktails that make for a picture-perfect evening. The world-famous Woody’s Breakfast and Burgers prides itself on being the go-to spot for casual yet delicious fare from sunrise to sunset. This laid-back beach restaurant on Ocean Boulevard serves sandwiches, tacos, and smoothies.

Things to Do

Whether you’re walking, people-watching, cycling, rollerblading, skating, or shopping, Pacific Beach is an outdoorsy neighborhood where there’s always something active to do or a beautiful place to see. Crystal Pier is a wonderful spot for many reasons; you can take in sweeping views of the Pacific or watch surfers riding the blue waves. The 1920s pier overlooking the ocean also has a quaint hotel with beachy, New England-inspired cottages—perfect for a staycation. Not far from the pier, the Boardwalk offers a three-and-a-half-mile stretch of eclectic shops and restaurants right next to the beach, where you can lounge in the soft sand. Kate Sessions Park has a playground, sports fields, a large lawn with ocean views, and acres upon acres of unmaintained area for hiking and mountain biking. It’s also dog-friendly, so be sure to bring your furry loved ones. Trade grass for sand at Tourmaline Surfing Park, which is an exciting surfing spot and beach access point in North Pacific Beach. Here, you won’t be able to swim, but you can surf, sunbathe, kiteboard, and windsurf.
